Building my first pedal and need some help on the parts

Hello, there pedal building people! I'm building my first pedal. Exciting stuff! I'm building the Sabertooth pedal and I just have some questions on the parts for it.

The parts I have so far I've gotten off of pedalpartsplus.

Now I couldn't find a 20k resistor on the website. Now, they were out of stock on the 220n caps and I couldn't find the 10n caps. Or what's the conversion for that? I fund the Diodes and Transistors. for the pots, I found all of the ones except that they didn't have the B next to them, just the k. Does this make a difference at all?
Any suggestions for me? Are these the right parts?

Hello, and welcome to the club

10n = .01uF- panasonic is good
220n = .22uF- looks like they're out.  ppp doesn't really have the best selection of caps...

just quickly glancing at this:
you need a 47uF radial electrolytic cap, not .47
you also need 2 100uF radial electrolytic caps (the circles on the diagram denote electrolytic)
lose the .1 ceramic cap
don't forget an led and something to mount it with

on the pots, B means linear, A means audio (some places you'll order from call this log), and it can make some difference.  You want linear for this pedal.

Grab some extra parts of all of them that you can afford- you'll use them later in something.  Apologies if I missed anything.

Another solution to cut down is to find an alternate supplier. I like PPP and use them frequently for enclosures and switches, but mammoth and smallbear have a much, much better selection of the rest plus you can get some switches and enclosures. Check out those other locations.

This is an updated list of what I have. Looking good now? For .22uf it says Panasonic ECQ-V. On Smallbear the part is ECQ-B. Is that a difference? And about how much wire will I need?

I wouldn't worry about the difference in nomenclature on those panasonics.  I would think either should be fine.  I hope you're not going to pay shipping for one cap from smallbear though...
The list looks better, although I haven't double-checked every single part.  One thing I would suggest is substituting a 10k resistor for R8 since you're using a blue LED.  Those things are very bright and 4.7k there is going to half blind you every time you look at it.  Seriously.
I would also grab one extra transistor and one extra led in case you fry one.
Ten ft of wire should be plenty.


PPP has a nasty habit of deleting your shopping cart after a few hours.  You'll probably want to order this stuff pretty soon.

i am new to this whole building thing, i did complete a kit from smallbear and that went well.  i was wondering if carbon film resistors can be used instead of the metal fiber ones?   Does the 4k99 mean 4.99k?  I ordered a pack of resistors from futurlec and i cant find any 51k 20k or the 4k99 in my pack, can i substitute these with some other value thats close?

Welcome!

- 4k99 is 4.99k (pretty sure you can only get this value in metal film)
- You can sub carbon film for metal film
- The futurlec packs are great for getting started, but don't have everything
- just use a multimeter to find another value that gets you in the ballpark (i.e. - for 4k99, get a 4k7 or 5k1 and test a bunch until you find one that is closest to 4k99). you shouldn't hear a difference.

thanks a bunch, i actually just ran out and bought a bunch of metal film resistors. what about capacitors, i bought the polyester film ones but i forgot the 220 n, i just bought a multilayer ceramic one, is this ok or should i just order the 220n in the polyester film ones?  and does the direction the resistors face matter?  i thought i read somewhere that polarity matters.

as long as the value is correct, the cap should be fine.

resistors don't have polarity, doesn't matter which way they go.

It does make it much easier to read the resistors quickly if you orient them in the same direction starting with the first band. It's something I just notice myself doing these days, totally not necessary. That also helped me learn the color code by memory
