Bloviator problems and error in layout

Hi,

I recently built a bloviator, both in protoboard and PCB. I used the schematic and single
sided layout from the site. In this layout, the IC3 (TL074) has its ground and +Vcc swapped.
When I fixed the problem, plugged a guitar, amp, 9v PSU, and only got a loud popping, like
a motorboat at speed. The same ocurred with my protoboard build. The chip (TL074) also got
way hotter than normal.

Besides the mistake in the layout, I still can't get it to work. Any ideas?

There is no mistake on the layout. Power and ground go to the correct pins, which are 9v to pin4 and ground to pin11. When you switched those, you were applying the power incorrectly which is why it did not work and the IC got hot. An IC getting hot is almost always an indication of reversed power rails.

You should switch the power to the correct pin and use a new TL074. The other one may be fried.
