Yep, but admittedly, I haven't gone back recently and tried it at a lower bias point.  And no, I don't screen the JFET for gain in this build.  I just pre-screen them to make sure they bias in the circuit.

What the point of biasing them higher than 1/2 Vcc?  I read somewhere to try that, but wouldn't it just clip more of the top half of the waveform? Perhaps that's the idea. Oldhousescott  would know...    FWIW I biased mine at 5V, sounded good there
