polarity protection diodes. 1n914s instead of 1n4001s?

hi guys. i need some polarity protection diodes.
1n4001s are the one always recommended, but i have a big load of 1n914s.
can i use them in projects like dirtbag dlx,current lover,weenier way, green bean and others?
