Forgive me Bean, for I have sinned.  It has been 3 years, 8 months since my last pedal build confession.

This one came about because my son expressed an interest in building a pedal, and he chose the Zakk Wylde branded MXR ZW44 distortion, and ZW90 phaser as something he wanted.

I whipped up a schematic, then set him up with a quick lesson in board layout in Eagle, and let him design the board. Manufacturing was done by Elecrow. He had a great time doing the board design.

Next step was soldering, and he completed the ZW44 side of the board, and it fired up first try, which was impressive. I then soldered on the 4 SMD parts, and left it for him to finish up the phaser side.

About a year later, after bugging him every few months to finish it, he finally admitted that maybe I should finish it for him. Half an hour later, it was done.

I've fitted it into a Jack Daniel's metal tin, which is apparently appropriate for the artist involved. As it's thin metal, and is prone to dinting and bending, I've put the switches and board onto some steel sheeting, to make it a bit more solid. The power and jacks are connected with detachable plugs, for easy access if any repairs are needed.

The lettering has been done using a Cricut cutting machine with some sticky vinyl. It was a bastard to get all the lettering lined up, but I'm super happy with the end result.  It almost looks like it is part of the original print on the tin.

Gold numbers on the knobs, and orange leds, to invoke the colour of the drink.

Overall, it's such a tacky concept, but perfect for a teenage boy who's just shy of being legally allowed to drink (here in Aus). And just to show that class is something you have to learn, and teenage boys just don't tend to have it... the pedal with his matching Jack Daniel's brand flying-V guitar. So tacky that it almost works.

Pedal building is like the opposite of sex.  All the fun stuff happens before you get in the box.
