Any tips on de-soldering a 10 pin relay?

I need to reclaim the relay on several v1 and v2 vfe switching boards that I messed up the pads and traces on trying to de-solder sockets. I don't have a de-soldering gun but I do have a sucker. I think I might have to cut up the board to do each pin individually.

Any tips or tricks that I may be missing?

Solder wick is your best shot.

I recently saw a video on desoldering needles that seem from the videos to be pretty neat. I haven't tried them though.

Edit: Bit weird that the preview shows "Also good for body parts".

Now that's what I'm talking bout. I'm definitely gonna have to hit ebay for a set.

Edit: I bought a set, I'll report back how/if they work.

I remember watching a video on a special solder that doesn't solidify quickly.  You add in to what you have and get all the joints liquid before you remove the part.

On that note, I've never had any luck getting parts out by removing the solder first.  I usually put a bunch more solder so that you can't get all the leads hot at the same time and move the part out.  Granted, that is going to be a challenge with your 10 pin relay.  If you don't care about the board, what about a heat gun?

That looks tedious, solder wick is quicker and easier in my opinion.

I've never been able to get a wick to work well. As I touch the tip through to the solder, the strands always separate and don't pickup anything. I've watched videos of people doing it effortlessly but I just can't get the hang of it. Any tips?

+1 with Jimi. The wick mops it up around the pins. The pins on those relays are real thin so if you can center them in the holes you should be good.

That might work but I'm not sure it would work well for me since I bend the legs. I'd have to keep it real hot for a long time

The pins won't be here for a while, so maybe I'll give the wick another shot.

Chisel tip light pressure. Chemkwik makes some good stuff. I use it more than I'd care to admit.

I have had the best results with desoldering with adding fresh solder to the joints and use this solder sucker:

I have used it for over 2 years and it just works. The silicon tip is heat resistant so you can put your iron tip on the joint then the sucker on top to make a seal then press the button to.. well.. suck.

A bit of an aside: I've got a pricey Hakko desoldering gun but I find myself using a heatgun a lot more regularly now. It can help a lot with certain components. Gets SPDT and DPDT switches out totally clean and takes maybe a minute. Same thing for board mounted pots. My desoldering gun can be a lot more finicky with that stuff. Not sure how well it would work with a relay though.

I tried the wick again and it's a big no for me. I been thinking more and more about the heat gun. I watched a few videos and the stuff just falls right out. I might give that a try and just be ready to unbend the legs. I have slight concern that in every video the board always turns brown and seems scorched

The sucker I have is from when I was a kid so it's prob time to retire it. Thanks for the suggestion
