Does this only happen to me???

Okay, so I'm pretty new to pedal building.  A few months ago, I planned out about a dozen projects and made my first round of part purchases from Mouser, Small Bear, etc. etc.  Got through a half dozen builds or so, no problems.  Then I started a build of a Tube Screamer type project, and found that I had neglected to order 510k resistors.  Yes, I know I could combine resistors, but wanted the build to be clean, so figured I'd put it aside and come back to it down the road.  I started another build at random, and sure enough that one also needed 510k resistors. So I took it as a sign from on high, and figured I'd order them.  But I'm not going to order just 510k resistors,  because if I'm going to pay the grand sum of $7 for shipping, I'm going to make it count, right? So I embark on planning out the next phase of pedal builds, and all the additional parts I'll need, which then turns in to ordering a bunch of stuff not only from Mouser, but Small Bear, Tayda, and so on.

So I'm going through my Mouser shipment, eager to get back to my Tube Screamer, and guess what I forgot to include on the order.....Yes, you guessed right - 510k resistors.

I've done a lot of carpentry, and as the old saying goes: measure twice, cut once.  Pedal building is similar.  But now I've got to remember to apply the same rule to ordering stuff.  Check your work  ::)

This kinda feels like most parts orders I do, too. I always forget something and quite often the thing that started it all. But, I sure as hell seem to order a lot of stuff that never gets used. The problem with browsing Mouser is I always find something where I think "oh yeah, I'll figure out a way to use that in something". Yeah...not so much.

Pedal building is like the opposite of sex.  All the fun stuff happens before you get in the box.

Arrow.com

Free shipping, no minimum order. The search function blows (triple check to make sure you're getting the right sized resistors) and they deforsest small nations to package single orders, but its great for those "ah hell, I forgot" moments

This works for some places but I have to say it doesnt work for Smallbear. I have lost quite a few carts because it seems to reset after a while. I always take a screen shot of my temp cart at Smallbear now.

Back to the OT, this happens to me all the time. I guess the way I deal with it is to have so many projects in backlog, that I just move onto something else. I think it's really the only way to do this hobby. You have to really build up a huge collection of components and projects or be extra careful when ordering parts for each project.

Actually, I did that initially with a few parts, but then removed them.   I have a giant spreadsheet with all my projects in it and I create Mouser BoMs from it.  When I decided to order the necessary parts for a dozen more projects, I started the cart over again with my spreadsheet BoM, so I wasn't double ordering....

Earlier today I made a Mouser project called "Stuff I Forgot"

Yes, I learned this about the Small Bear shopping cart the hard way as well....

Thanks for the tip.  I might try them. Then again, once the build docs for the Harbinger 1.5 and Polytrog are posted, I'm probably going to want to add those to the queue and buy parts for those, so I might just hold off for now and go on to the next project.

I always have a shitload of different projects going on at the same time, not just pedals, in various stages from development to actual building. Since most of these don't have to be finished at any certain time, they can be lying around for months or years and progress at different speeds. Unless I want to finish a particular thing and I stumble upon parts I am missing, I note them down in a spreadsheet. The parts are sorted by supplier (with annotation for what project, or I wouldn't remember what half the stuff was for), so once I order from Mouser when something more pressing comes up, I won't forget anything I want from Mouser.

Since you are new to effects building/electronics, you have to build up some stock of standard parts. Definitely get a full set of resistors from 1R to 10M, also a range of typical capacitors, ICs and transistors. There are several threads here where reasonable things to buy for beginners are discussed.

Never fails. Always, and I mean, always happens to me.

You know that 470k might work for substituting 510k. Plus, there's always Amazon/Arrow/eBay if you need get 510k.

Yup, same as above. I've also got in the habit of ordering something I 'think' I don't have only to find that I already have multiple... ::)

Parts Jar section of the forum has saved me a couple of times.  BTW, I've got some 510ks I can drop in the mail for you.  Just PM me.

I'd build carts over a period of months and when placing time came i'd go over it and there'd often be parts i had no idea why they were there so i'd delete. Unpacking the order seemed to always jar to memory what they were for and why i'd be adding them back into the next cart.
