Hi all,

I have a question regarding this song by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. I'm very interested in what you guys make of this tone; what pedal/effect/amp do you hear?

Here's the link:

Ever since I saw the episode of True Detective where this features in the ending 2 years back, the guitar tone on this song has stuck in my head. Especially that of the guitar solo that starts around 1:10.

Thanks a lot and looking forward to your thoughts! ;D

I know, traditionally speaking, a lot of Nick Cave's tones come from "cheap" guitars run through tweed-ish amps with everything turned to 11. I'll see if I can dig a bit further into this particular track, but that would be a place to start.

Ok, apparently Warren Ellis is also particularly fond of an old  Colorsound fuzz wah, another place to look. The demos of it I can find on youtube do sound similar to the track in question, with the fuzz engaged without touching the wah treadle.

Hey somnif, thanks for your answers! Will definitely look into the colorsound fuzz, it sure sounds promising!

I think the colorsound fuzz wah used a circuit similar to the colorsound 1-knob fuzz.  There are great repro's of both the 1-knob fuzz (also a simple one to DIY) and the wow fuzz (fuzz wah).  More info on the D*A*M site...

I think yer right? It sounds germanium too? Transistor Hfe 120-165ish range, colorsound one knob is a very forgiving circuit wether it's germanium or silicon. I think it has something to do with the smallish capacitor across Q1's base & collector? it really helps shape its sound? one of my favorite fuzz face variants, btw 2n2222a metal can & 2n3904 transistors sound good for silicon version. Good luck on yer build.

This song reminds me a lot of "Plume" by the Smashing Pumpkins. In fact, if you start both songs at 1:12 and compare the solos, the tone/feel is very similar minus the phaser. Maybe a Mudbunny run into a Bloodstone set in "manual" mode would get you that hollow/heavy fuzz sound (if you don't want to drop $$$ on an original Colorsound Wah Fuzz).
