Wire question

What's the sort of wire the people use to get the really clean guts where you can bend corners in it and it stays bent? I'm guessing it's some sort of single core stuff?

I normally use stranded core which works fine but my guts always end up looking like a real rat's nest.

I did try some single core wire that I bought on eBay but I found it impossible to get the solder to stick to it, not sure if I bought the wrong sort? Any recommendations on the right stuff to use?

If you are using a solid core wire, you will probably want something thinner. I think most builders use 22 or 24 gauge stranded wire. So maybe 24 or 26 gauge solid core will work? 26 gauge solid core won't tolerate much bending, though.

If you are wanting super-duper 90 degree angles, this may not be the droids you're looking for, but it'll do about everything else.

+1 on 24g pre-bond from Smallbear. Its good stuff and will bend like you want it to and the price is good also.  Barry at GuitarPCB used to sell wire which you could almost write with but unfortunately he doesn't carry it anymore.

Be warned -- you cannot work solid core wire like you can stranded. It won't tolerate too much monkeying around before the conductor inside the wire will break.

Anyone use Cat5 patch cables? I have boxes of them from previous job, most had incredibly thin twisted pair that was almost impossible to strip. Anyway i found one i think comcast had left a while back and while twisted pairs are still thin, they are much stiffer, so i cut it up, the individual pairs tinned nicely, and that gives you 8 different colors and and w 4 twisted pair x6 ft that is 24 feet of cable for free if you have an extra ethernet cable laying around, not a whole lot of use for them any more.
