Can anyone think of a way to switch on an effect so that it "fades in" to a preset volume? Probably couldn't be true bypass, but I think it would be useful for distortion type effects especially if you could control the fade in time. Any thoughts?

You could do that with digital control. If you knew anything about programming that would be the place to start. The DSP forum at DiYstompboxes would be a good place to find help and ideas.

Another way to do this would be with an LDR and an integrator.

The slow gear is a reverse envelope, what I'm looking to do is a smooth time variable transition from a clean sound to a dirty one. I need the effect to fade in, not the guitar. I think a simple LDR controlled mixer might be the way to go.
