Another finishing technique

I decided to try out some Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black. The idea is you wipe the chemical on aluminum and it reacts and blackens the surface. Supposedly you can get a pretty even finish with a couple of coats but ain't nobody got time for that. So, I rubbed it in for a few minutes, rinse and dried. After that I scratched up the surface with some fine steel wool and later on did one coat of gun stock wax. I like this look quite a bit! A white silk screen over this would look really cool.

The Black solution is $8 for 3oz and that should do quite a few enclosures.

Very cool idea/finish. I like all the experimenting you have been doing with finishes. Fresh ideas are always a good thing.

I'd like to see a before/after. In the photo it's hard to tell how the look changed.

But any new finishing option is a good one, in my opinion.

Can do. I'll be doing another enclosure soon.

This is one I used black leather dye on but did the same steel wool trick. Funny that I kinda hate relic guitars but I really like this look on an enclosure.

Man, thanks for this. I think it would be perfect for a steampunk project I've been dreaming up.

When Rej gets back to the internet, he's going to want to have /words/ with you... ;) :) ;)

More seriously, it's nice to see experimentation!

Khajiit has no need for bottle caps.

That's pretty cool Brian.  Is it durable? (assume yes).  I'd be interested to see this with a color translucent powder coat over the top, assuming the black finish can withstand heat...Oh the endless possibilities...

Weird I was just looking at that stuff a week ago, wondering if it would laser etch.

Might be a cool combo with etched enclosures y'all do with toner transfer.
