I have been using infrared leds in builds lately and i cant endorse them enough. As clippers they have the lowest forward voltage of leds. They couple well in circuits that switch between led and silicon clipping. The volume jump between modes is less severe but the led crunch is retained. I like them in the symetrical section of the tube screamer with silicon in the asymetrical. They also work great for "blackout" leds to complete circuits with unwanted indicators.

Interesting. Are yours silicon or gallium arsenide?

I don't know jack about GaAS junction devices but I seem to recall reading on the internet (so it must be true) that they either deteriorated over time or had some other problem.

You've piqued my interest enough to get some with my next Mouser order.

I use cheap 940nm ones from tayda. I cant hear a difference between the 3mm and 5mm.

I can't find any infrared LED's on the Tayda site. Or did you mean ultraviolet?
