Stupid Dirtbaby level control question

Hi all,

Apologies in advance for not answering this for myself but I'm away from my rig currently. I recently got an amp with a line level loop, which my Dirtbaby didn't seem to agree with (distorted delayed signal). I had always thought this was an output volume control and had tried to set it around unity.

In looking at the schematic, it looks like the level control is actually for setting input level. Is that true? If so, I should be able to dial back some of the heat and make the Dirtbaby happy again.
