Grab up those MN3001s while you still can, it's all we have left from that "era"!
That's terrible advice, there's relatively few of those chips available as they were retired for the lower noise parts quite early on and all that does is reduce the small quantity out there for repairs.

So *we* shouldn't buy 3001s in case you need a few in the future?  ;D

I'm actually thinking more of the synth and studio rack guys where they were more widely used, I doubt i'll come across any equipment I need a MN3001 to repair, only pedal I can think of is the Tychobrahe... and those are hens teeth anyway.

As far as the mistaken mn3005 goes, I guess there are 2 main possibilities. These chips are original and someone during manufacturing hit the wrong button.  Or they are relabelled (but still original) mn3008's and someone put a tube of mn3005's in with the 3008's which would probably be pretty easy to do as a 5 looks a bit like an 8.

Either way let me tell you right know, they don't come up very often unfortunately!  Difficult to say how many I've tested over the last year or 2 for the webstore but I would say it would be in the order of 100-200 somewhere and this is the first one I have found.

There have been so many fellow DIY'ers that have been ripped off by mn3005 sellers, this just feels like karma to me :D

You can check what I did, did the bottom look like it had come off a chip like this... (where the ink can wear easily, so a worn off 5 could very easily look like a worn off 8
).

Or the more modern type we see more often with the border.

No doubt they're still original, re-labelled or not.
