All in one Bass Pedal

I put a used Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass on hold and will pick it up on Monday.
I will be playing it in a small room with a small PA.  I would prefer not to buy an amp.  It would be very convenient to build a pedal with a direct out to plug into the PA.
What projects/effects would you recommend?
((I am not a bass player, but someone needs to play;)  I have limited knowledge on how to get the best time, no tip is too simple))

You could do some kind of cabinet simulator and add a direct out.

I built a transformer less direct box for a guy, I have a 4 in 1 with an overdrive, a green Russian, an phaser and a delay. Covered 90% of my needs.

Also a ginger is great for an amp in a box simulator.

There's a Sansamp BDDI clone project out there (though I suspect the original tracing comes from the Behringer clone): http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=88617.0

I just put one together with a Compulator in the same box. Makes for a great all-in-one, and the Sansamp stuff sounds pretty good when you're running direct.

Here's mine:  Compressor, fuzz, preamp, 1/4 inch and balanced XLR out.  I don't really feel that a cab sim is necessary for bass personally.

catalinbread SFT is my go to for bass dirt at the moment. That, and a klone. And a modified rat
Anyway, if the SFT interests you, Jubal does a pcb for the SFT (lamprey I think) if you want a fabbed board, or get haberdasher to etch a fault line for you...
