Question for all of you PCB layout-ers  8)

When you design for a stand-up resistor... what spacing do you give it? I know that when I design for resistors that are laying down (normal?) I give it 0.4in. What is the spacing for stand-up resistors?

Brian's Eagle library has them at 0.2 and 0.3 inches. .3 inches also works for 1/8W resistors. 0.2 inches is two holes on perfboard, as well, I believe.

I use the 5mm spacing (0.3 I guess in inches) as it is the same as most box caps I use, and also good for 1/8W as Jon mentioned.

It also Makes it easier to get all the components in neat order on the PCB, which I am a bit obsessive about :)

Thanks for the replies gents! It look like 0.3 is the winner. Funny though... I usually use 0.4 for 1/4-watt resistors laying down and when I have populated layouts with stand-up 1/4 watt resistors it looked like the space saved was a lot more than 0.1  ???

We will see how it goes  ;)

I think when you are going for space savings, using a 2.54mm lead spacing is fine and it's often done that way. It does make it a bit harder to route things though. I kinda like the way it looks too. There's a guy in the DIY headphone amp world who's into making everything as small as possible and he does these incredible layouts using single hole spacing for the resistors and they look amazing.
