Some SMD J201s mounted on 4x4 vero board, legs added, filed down as small as possible.

Holes drilled in a candle, surplus Envirotex from some enclosures poured in, and J201s drowned in it.

Leave a few days, crack the candle, wipe with some solvent, and paint.

A lot of work, but the J201s do only cost 13p each, and anything else is just surplus and essentially free.
And they do look like some 1960s mojo trannies,  TGP would lap them up.

That's hilarious. Worth the effort for faux mojo. Love it.

Tried selling 'em for 20 pounds each, yet? :)

Great idea executed perfectly!

Do they have the same pinout as their counterparts?

gingataff

Bravo!
I'm so jealous that I didn't think of that.

Genious and unbelievable are the words that came to my head right away! Well done! True DIY and really clever!   :)
And with the price of TH J201s going up, that's a pretty cool solution!  ;)
Nice job.

Have you tried measuring them for a phaser yet? Load up a jFet tester on a breadboard and tell us the results!

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

That is so awesome, what did you use for the legs?

We've only used them in OD/Distortions so far, but yep, you can pair some up and do a phaser if you make enough of them ;)

The legs are the solid core wire I use stripped.

Jeez, that looks like a lot of work.

For some FET layout stuff, I am thinking of making boards that accept through-hole or SMT.  It's SO much easier to solder them onto the correctly sized pads on the board.  I don't think I'd have the patience for this.
