What might some alternatives to the lm741 be?  Don't have any here at the moment and was hoping I might have a surrogate.

Haberdasher

possibly op07
or you could try a tl071 or lf351

Not quite, the 5534 may require external compensation in some settings and it can need a slightly different set up to work correctly.

So yeah a TL061 or TL071 are probably good substitutes.

Good to know I need to be more careful with it. I just picked a couple up from Tayda with one order a while back, and I've dropped them into a couple different circuits and everything seemed to work just fine.

Yeah they work great a lot of the time but there are just some instances where they wont, they can also have significantly different sound due to that compensation.
