ive breadboarded the Cupcake twice now differently to make sure i didnt connect something wrong, and both times i just get a nasty fuzz with no form of compression.
i tried swapping out the JFETs to no avail
ive heard about matching JFETs for phasers, is this important for comp?
voltages are as follows:
battery reads 8.6 (should i get a new battery?)
Q1: D-8.67 , S-1.24 , G-0.80
Q2: D-0.80 , S-7.17 , G-0.01
IC: 1-8.00 , 2-6.67 , 3-7.74 , 4-0.00

Does anything change when you change the bias trim?

Are you Sure about the voltages on Q2? The source should be similar to the gate. And the gate should have the same voltage as the source of Q1 (okay, the drain and source are interchangeable, so you might have that right). Did you double check the pinout of your FETs?

There is no need to match the FETs. Q2 is just to make the current to Q1 behave.

Your IC voltages are weirdly high. Make sure you have no shorts and I guess make sure you don't have the chip in backwards or have some pins mixed up.

only change that happens when turning the bias is about halfway up it goes "plunk!" and then theres no sound.
i just redid the layout on my breadboard again, spacing everything out as much as possible to be sure of no shorts and correct connections, and double checked all my values.
ive used 2n5457, J201, and MPF102 as well as flipped them around (D S G when looking at the face of it correct?)
swapped the 4558 with another one, ive made several ODs with them so im pretty confident on the pinout
i remeasured the voltages and got different numbers but it seems as if the problem is elswhere, as in the process of flipping the JFETs i discovered that removing them has no affect on the fuzz sound im getting
after some research i found this fellow had the same problem

though im using the parts listed on the schem...

my only guess at this point is perhaps theres a bad component somewhere? im using tants for lack of electros and ive heard they can be touchy, perhaps ive fried one?
