This would probably go in the tech help, but I have no camera at the moment and I can't take pictures.Basically, when I turn the effect on, there's no signal, plus, weirdly, the led will only turn on if the board is not connected to ground...is this normal?

This sounds like a wiring problem (reversed wiring somewhere?) or a solder bridge to ground. Or maybe a faulty component somewhere.... Seriously, borrow a camera, or someones phone and snap a few shots. Chances are, we can work this thing out! In the mean time, double check all your solder connections, component values, wiring etc.  Good luck!
