Soldering Iron Temp

What temp do most of you have your irons set to? I know this has a lot to do with what solder you use as well but what are some guidelines? I don't want to fry any of my expensive mojo components.

I don't consider myself an expert by any means, but I know that I never set my soldering iron to the hottest setting. I've had good success adjusting to 3/4 of my maximum setting. I guess if you're concerned about a delicate/vintage/expensive getting fried you can always get one of those heat sinks you clip on the part...just for safety sakes Good luck!

I set mine at around 615 degrees.  3-4 seconds of preheating and then lay the solder on.

Mine's always at about 450 centigrade.  Dunno that in fahrenheit.
