PCB Drilling

I guess I could have posted this in my PCB transfers topic....

Are there any tips you guys have for drilling PCBs?  I have a lot of bits coming to me in the mail and I have a drill press, but I'm wondering if there are any hidden secrets I can utilize so I don't screw up all these boards that i've etched so far.

having a drill press is going to help you a LOT. when I have to drill a PCB I have to wing it with a Black & Decker, vice grips, and a 2 by 4. I've got the best results when I notched each pad dead center with a small nail before drilling. the notching is tedious but it will make drilling a snap. when drilling keep the bit going at top speed and drill SLOWLY.

Beyond a drill press, or a Dremel with a drill press attachment: use carbide bits and a lamp with a magnifying glass of some sort.

I use a #64 bit for components/wires and #60 if I'm drilling for PCB mounted pots.

The lamp might cost you $15...but is well worth it.
