I believe what you would be testing for is ESR not if they read the right value. IIRC there's testers that will tell you how much life an electro has left. Not sure if it's as relevant here as in amps but it seems like a bad idea to use old caps with a higher possibility of failing..you might be setting yourself up for frustration later to save a bit of pocket change..

Thanks Magic, that's kind of what I thought about the electro's. They just look so cool I wanted to do a fuzz circuit with them.
