I vaguely remember things like this when I took stuff apart as a kid, but nowadays I'd rather not be as destructive  : P

Any ideas as to how best to remove the heatsink?

edit: or maybe it's an RF shield, idk heh.

Hard to tell. Left side of the left one, looks like there's some silver solder or adhesive?
I'd start with an exacto knife with a sacrificial blade.
But the ring around it on the enclosure/shield on the right one(underside) looks like it was press fit in.
If an exacto doesn't do it, or at least won't free it, could try a heat gun, but again, I think they may be press fit.
If you don't need to salvage the shield, Dremel through each side, splitting the shield in half with the can in the center of the cuts. Use a mini/fine cut hacksaw for the last bit closest to the can.
Then just gently flex it.
Cutting a straight line on one side and a V on the other may be beneficial. Then place the V in a vise and get it to smile like Pac-Man.
Good luck.
