New tip care

So I picked up a new set of tips for my antex iron and just wanted to ask how people go about tinning their tips the first time they're used.  I have a terrible track record with new tips and would like to know what I'm doing wrong. 

Once the iron is hot I apply some solder then wipe it off and have a nice shiny tip all ready to go but a few times the solder has just beaded up round the tip so won't stick.

So any best practice tips would be greatly appreciated.

Tip cleaner and a nice brass Brillo pad sort of deal.

+1 Use the brass shavings ball.
Your tips will last much longer.
This thread will go south quick....

Brass is good. Water is bad (I used to use a damp sponge, I have since learned otherwise).

Beyond that, um, make sure you're within a happy operating temperature range.

Thanks gents I'm using a brass ball it's specifically the first time you heat up a brand new tip I sometimes have problems getting solder to stick to it that first time.  I've bought some tip cleaner and will try this new tip tonight if I get time.
