If you build an effect and it works but then when you put it in an enclosure you get a high pitch whine/whistle (gets worse as you crank the knobs) and also does it on battery power, what causes this?

Power supply? What effect?

Pedal building is like the opposite of sex.  All the fun stuff happens before you get in the box.

This was a while back. It happened on a tube screamer and big muff build.  What exactly is positive feedback if you could please explain.

I got a sort of this noise, if I understand, with a TS808. Is that like a theramin high pitch? :o

Anyway, I had to move a bit the wires of the gain pot. I think getting far from the jacks.
Beware the ground wires, too.
What is your off board wiring?

with high gain circuits like this, it can be a problem of wire placement indeed. You could also try using shielded wiring for in and output.
I build pedals to hide my lousy playing.
