Building Multi’s round two.

I've been throwing ideas around in my head for a way of taking Alice further for a while now and thought I'd share the process with you. For no other reason than I've shared it with Facebook, so the pics are all there and you can see from them, how my twisted mind works...

It boiled down to this, I was watching a load of drone machine videos and noticed that they work better in multiples. I fancied building something that did that sort of thing, and realised that the Machete can do that. That was the seed of the idea...

That scary moment when you think to yourself "this might be fun to build"...

So, 3x machetes, into 3x tremolos, in parallel, then into a delay then into a reverb. Possibly the stupidest idea I've ever had... I might just have to build it.

After testing out scenarios with various stomp boxes it became apparent that 3x machetes into 3x trems just wasn't going to work. Plus I wanted the modulation bits on the back because they make it go all synthy. So a rethink as I'd not enough space. Down to two Machetes and two trems...

Did a lot of proof of concept stuff today with a load of effects. Pretty sure this will be very close to the final layout.

line into buffer/ splitter
2x Uglyface+LFO in parallel
one goes into a Tremolo
the other goes into a Sample and Hold (no filter)
Then recombined and go into the modulation effects
Delay
Phaser
Reverb

Mwahahaha

Again back to photoshop and more ponderage. Having the trem on the back of one of the machetes and the S&H on the other removes the option of them affecting the pair of them running in parallel. Also running a trem at the same time as the S&H is just gonna sound pants, they're an either or thing. I did have an idea that you could have one of the machetes producing a percussive rhythm and the other spazzing out with the S&H, but couldn't see that really working either... So have decided that they'll both now happen after the two Machetes have been re-combined.

It's evolving. Some things removed, some things added... Some ideas adjusted. But it's starting to take shape. Though I've now got to fit the switching, LEDs, and another control...

This I suspect is near as damnit the final layout. I haven't even built a board yet and I've been working on this build for about a month now. The actual assembly of the pedal will be made fairly easy by all this prep work though.

I'm not sure that labelling all the controls like that would actually help me understand what is going on!

...and after all that work, practical testing has shelved the parallel Machete idea. It just didn't sound as good as I'd hoped. Still, it'll just be another Alice, as I need to make one regardless. But it will be a version of this one with extras so it's not all gone to waste.

Feeling slightly dejected by it to be honest. Maybe this is the source of my current mardy mood? Who knows, but I expected awesome and it just didn't. Gotta take the rough with the smooth though.

I've given Cleggy AliceII so I'm going to build Alice 2.1. I reckon I can squeeze the Maestro in there in place of the P90 (I really want the P90 for something else...) and I'm still going to try and fit the Sharkfin in there too.

It looks, something like this in concept.

...and will happen shortly.

This Alice thing is mind-blowing, man!
Someday I would like to do something like this. Gotta get a few more singles under my belt, first!
I build, and once in a while I might sell, pedals as "Vertigo Effects".

You have a switch to choose between S&H and Trem, are you changing their order at the same time?

Having the S&H in front of Machette when in and and the Trem after the noise maker? If not that would be the pinnacle! :P

Need to build a S&H and a delay to further copy this in the synth...

It was a bit either/or in testing you either chop it up with the trem or let the S&H go random on it. So I can get away with adding it on a switch. Which is nice as I don't have any space for any more stomps, knobs or switches. I'm having to drop the wave knob/switch from the trem as it is to make it fit. That'll be set to square anyhow as it's most choppy. Speed and depth with be dual gangs with speed and rez. Just need to do some wafer swappage.

Nothing really works in front of the noise machine as it messes with the envelope.
