Turns out the adaptor is just a polarity converter. Takes the source from center negative and converts it to center positive. Still DC, no AC detected. Your wall wart is center positive so it may work without the converter if your willing to try it.

Turns out the plug doesn't even fit!!  Guess I'll be purchasing the adapter

Thanks for checking the output. Very interesting. It is one weird power supply section. All that strangeness to get 5VDC when they could just use a very common 5VDC input. I'm tempted to breadboard this circuit, but the two Maxim IC's are a bit expensive to just be mucking about with. I'm at least going to have to look at the PS input section using Spice.
