Name that effect!

Hey all

Just doing a bit of YouTubing and came accros this great performance by Edwin Collins. Can anyone identify what pedal he is using in the verses for that super squelchy chord run? It's first heard at 0.19

My guess is autowah + fuzz. Could involve some sort of synth filter, but it's an envelope effect for sure.

He used a couple different fuzzes, but the one on that song is a B&M Champion fuzz according to a post on Offset guitars (and confirmed elsewhere) http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=70099

They also speculate that the filter is a Mutron. This makes sense to me given Collins's apparent love of vintage gear (and clothing).

EDIT: Just found your video of Madbean's Nautilus Jon. Can't watch it yet though as I'm back at work. Does this get in the ballpark of the sound?

Yep I've read on numerous places it was a B+M fuzz.

The filter could be a multitude of things.

A mutator (a high end filter unit, no longer made) is another possibility.

Edwin Collins story is quite an amazing one. The guy has been through a lot.

Yep he's had a tough few years! Hopefully he is still on the mend. Always comes accross like a great guy in interviews.

I've read that an EH Bassballs can get the filtersound too. I'm loathed to buy pedals anymore though. Need to find some DIY versions!

From what I heard, it is indeed an fuzz and some filtering, but another big aspect of the sound was plugging the fx straight into the mixing console while recording, no amp. I have no idea how he replicates this live, but thanks for the youtube, I'm cranking it as I type this. Great, great song!!

when I first heard this song on the radio years ago, I immediately thought it was recorded direct. So that's interesting.

The wha part of this live version reminds me of some of the sounds from the Nautilus/MuTron III.

In a recent correspondence with Anthony Macaris (I wrote about it in my Colorsound Supa Wah Fuzz Swell topic) he wrote to me:

"The fuzz circuit in that pedal btw is the one we used in the B&M Fuzz – so same circuit as the 'Girl like You' Edwyn Collins pedal – he played his guitar through it straight into the desk for that recording !!! "

So that's that hehe.

It's such a great song, with two fantastic and distinct guitar tones to boot!

Guitargeek.com says he had a Guyatone Wah Rocker on his pedal board in the 90's. I guess this (if true) would probably be the filter used for the live version. http://www.guitargeek.com/edwyn-collins-guitar-rig-and-gear-setup-1996/

Wow, that's a nice catch! And I love it that he chose those two effects so wisely and stayed in our minds forever...I mean I can recall those sounds anytime I want whereas some other epic sounds from various songs I sometimes have a hard time with, or can't remember at all.
