Interesting.  Are the footprints on the PCB identical?  (I'm thinking yes but...)

Yes, the footprint is identical.

There is one small difference between the plastic 9mm and the normal 9mm as far as the PCB goes. The support pins on the plastic pots are about twice as wide as the support pins on the normal pots. Depending on the hole sizes you have for the 9mm pot, it could make a difference.

I designed around the plastic shaft version to start with, so I guess that's why it works for me.

Yeah, that would be the way to do it. The centers look like they line up exactly.
