Road Rage - double 5V adapter to power 9V effects?

I built the Road Rage hoping to use my old Motorola 5V power supplies to power some of my effects.

The Motorola adapter is rated 5V, 850ma.

I used the MAX1044CPA and 3 1N4001s for D1-D3 hoping to drop the doubled voltage closer to 9V.

With no load, the Rage puts out 9.5V, but when I power up my Wampler 65 clone, it drops to 8.5v.

Is this normal?
