dear Pedalhollics :P
My neighbours in Germany are a bit annoyed by my clear coat spraying in the balcony :S
I´ve seen some people brushing a clear coat with a foam brush claiming very good results.
Any experience on that? I know poweder coat seems the best, but no way for me. Im thinking about brushing because i could do in a enviromental/neighbour friendly way. I dont mind if i have to wet sand, the boxes are small and i quite like the job.
cheers!

I have no experience with brushing on clearcoat, but I've built a small 'spray booth' out of a big cardboard box and a whole lot of duct tape. This works like a charm and prevents clear coat or paint from reaching places they shouldn't.

While I can't comment on the brushes as I use a rattlecan, I wetsand my clearcoat - doesn't take much.  After a lot of think clearcoats I get a small square of wet+dry 1200 grade, keep it wet, and just run it down the face that I'm sanding until it's smooth.  Generally you don't need to rub hard, and I don't use a circular motion.  When that's done, I use a cut/polish compound to bring up the shine.

I've done this on the builds I've posted here - the little angel, krankosaurus, and the crusty brussel.

Are they complaining about the smell or the overspray?  If they're complaining about the overspray, you can build a makeshift spray booth for about 30 Euros from Obi if you want (big cardboard box cut open, furnace filter, and fan on the back to suck the air away from you).  The filter and box will contain most of the overspray, and the fan would draw the air away from you.

If they are complaining about the smell, just find out when they are not home and do it then.

Or my solution to neighbor problems when I lived there, buy them a keg of Hefe Weisen, all will be fine.

Beavis's instructions for "box in a day finishing" brushing polyurethane.

To get around the fume/smell issue (literally makes me sick) i switched to using an airbrush and spraying waterborne lacquers, no smell and extremely low VOC's.

I also recommend the "giant box" paint booth. Best thing I made this year. No more overspray on the bench, cement, car & cat.. all is well now.

If you do brush, I recommend using a non-yellowing polyurethane, and baking between coats. It works for me.

Heheheh a hefeweizen is not a bad idea!
Hmmm! Spray booth sounds nice, but not much space thou! I think i will give a try with clear acrylic+ Pu waterborne lacquer and see how it goes....

Yup, Juansolo has a good tutorial on how to protect enclosures with envirotex.

You don't need a lot of space for the booth, a 600mm X 600mm X 300mm moving box (from Obi), a little bit of string and you're good to go.  Put the box on it's side, put screws in each of the for bottom plate holes, tie the string to one of them, use a pliers on another screw to maneuver the box, and you're good.  It will fit on any German balcony, and contain the overspray.  Just don't drink all the hefeweizen prior to painting, of it's a long bike ride to Kaufland for more....

When not etching, I use envirotex.  It takes a bit of practice, but you can do it indoors and the results can look really good.

model car builders use floor finishing wax for clear coat.

I will try this before the end of the year.  It is supposed to be durable and very easy to use.
