is there a tuitorial somewhere here on how to make your own vactrol?

Take an LED and solder it into the circuit. Take an LDR and solder it into the circuit. Point LED at LDR. Done. (See for reference: the Harbinger doc.)

You can put some heat shrink over them if you want to test it outside the box.

Perhaps it might be a good idea to socket them... and then you can try various led's and ldr's .

Agreed! I built a Demter Teulator that just would not work with any 'roll your own' i rolled.. but worked straight away with a VTL5C3..
