LED/LDR questions

Working on a shoot the moon, I found I had an LDR in the right range but I'm wondering about the LED to use.

I have yellow/red/green diffused  
and only blue clear.

Q:  which LED would I be best off using?
Q:  do I need to flatten the top of the LED?

I prefer green or red diffused.

Don't flatten the top.

Red diffused worked like a dream on my build, but I haven't tried anything else, so it might get even better..

The circuit is remarkably un-picky about the LED (and somewhat about the LDR as well). Just about any LED will do the trick, but you may notice some will produce a more pronounced difference when the Depth is maxed out.
