Sparkplug transistors

So I've built a Sparkplug with the IR510s, and it's a nice od, but I'm not completely sold on IRs.  I actually wired it up wrong the first time (the shorted IR), and it cleaned up the pedal and the amp entirely, kinda like the Paul Gilbert Detox EQ.  But then I fixed it, and I guarantee I can't replicate the error.

Anyway, I've got another board ready to go (going to make it into a dual footswitchable gain unit), and wondering if anyone else has tried different transistors in there, and if so, how'd they work out?  Thinking of putting 2N7000s in, but haven't committed to that yet.
