So after much debugging, I finally have this thing working. (small tip, swap that 100k to ground with a 100r, and see how much output you get. none?)

Didn't have any bs170's, so I subbed in some 2n7000's (mindful of the pinout...). i'm pretty underwhelmed to say the least - it sounds pretty nasty and fuzzy. will the bs170's help, or is this just the nature of the beast? It doesn't really resemble any of the demo's I have heard. more splat splat, less chug chug.

I picked up a cheap hand painted box of Metal a while ago and was  underwelemed.  I don't remember Splat/splat but then there wasn't much chugga/chugga either.  For the sake of a few dollars from Tayda I would try the BS170's(at least you can sell the clone then).  I know Vex doesn't get much respect but I emailed him about mine and he told me  how many of my version had been made.  This made selling for profitz much easier ;) :P

just checking you spun the 2n7000s 180 degrees, right?
Or at least checked the pinout.

Ive always had ones that were pinoputs 180 degrees that of the BS170s

as for sounds, cant comment
