Bad news on the Smallbear 2506H NSL-7532 opto

I got a reply back from Steve on the NSL-7532 when I asked about a potential restock date:

Hi Gord--

I much regret, I can no longer supply these parts. The last lot that were made to my spec did not give the expected depth of phasing in customer tests. Advanced Photonix wants me to cover their engineering costs to tighten the spec, and then the selected parts would still cost me considerably more. Under the circumstances, I have decided to withdraw the items. Unfortunately, I can't offer a good work-alike.

Regards
SD

I'd been hoping to get 4 of these for a Harbinger 1.5 build.

Good to know.  I ordered the 9203 (don't quote me on that part number) that was the alternative in the build docs.  I really don't recall what I used in the other Harb's I've built so don't know that it's super critical but they do all sound different.

I guess the specs vary widely enough that they're almost like thru-hole JFets in their variance.

This looks close, or maybe even identical unless I'm missing something. Being new to this I probably am.

This is a pretty good alternative.  Very comparable to the NSL-7532. Just not as deep phasing as the high dark spec photocells Gordo is referring to.

The datasheet says 7Meg ohm dark.
you can get higher dark resistance LDRs than that.

Some other usable subs from this list I imagine probably GL5549

Resistance: @10 Lux
GL5506 2-5Kohm
GL5516 5-10kohm
GL5528 8-20Kohm
GL5537 18-50Kohm
GL5539 30-90Kohm
GL5547 3-15Kohm
GL5549 45-100Kohm

Dark Resistance:
GL5506 0.2Mohm
GL5516 0.5Mohn
GL5528 1Mohm
GL5537 2Mohm
GL5539 5Mohm
GL5547 20Mohm
GL5549 10Mohm

There's kits of those cheap GL series LDRs on ebay, might be worth getting one and trying different ones to see which might get the sound. I'd be interested in the findings for sure...

Gordo, I know I am always pushing the 3d printer stuff, but this seems topical. Cool idea and it could potentially solve some issues.

I have printed this and others like it but I haven't tried them out in a circuit yet.

That's so cool.  This one is 4 LDRs and an 18v bulb but I suspect you could do a similar setup.

My Univibe benchmark tends to be Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower, anything from Harvey Mandel's The Snake, and Sing Child Sing by Heart.  Meaning I tend to stay right in the middle in terms of speed and depth, so it might do me well to get one of those kits and try different ones.

I was about to take up this project and use those ... well then

If you can get NSL-5542 they sound great in univibe circuit..
