I know we all have tried and liked the original Whipple inductor, but recently I came across this new version on ebay and couldn't help but inquire about it. The Whipple Gold Standard, according to Mr. Whipple himself, "is made to even tighter tolerances and is tone tested to meet the requirements of the Gold Standard. It's the best sounding inductor."

Has anyone else seen these, or better yet, tried one? For $50, I kinda want a better explanation than that. ???

I'm not sure I could ever justify the cost of one but I tend to obsess over wahs so I can't say never...

I dunno, vs a vintage inductor the price isn't bad and he has been at it a long time, so if he says it is better it probably is!  I've wound my own inductors, and compared to winding pickups it is a lot more finnicky.  To get an inductor to have just the right resistance in the coil as well as the right inductance to sound just right with the stock circuit values requires careful removal of some of the magnet and. Dialing in the exact number of turns to get the right coil takes a lot of trial and error to figure it out, Michael has enough experience winding them to have his spec down pat I am sure.

Thanks for the perspective Tim. That's a good point. It just rubbed me wrong the way he answered. Maybe that's my fault for not asking more specific questions. I assume most buyers want something they can throw in a wah and get magical results and an answer such as "it's the best sounding inductor" would satisfy them. On the other hand, though I'm no expert I still have a better understanding of how the specs of an inductor could affect the sound so I am interested in knowing those specs before I purchase one. I think I'll ask better questions and see if i get more detailed answers.

I'll give you that, I think he is classically NYC nice, which means maybe a little coarse in tone, but a good guy nonetheless, and pretty knowledgable about what he is doing.  Just probably busy and you got a take it or leave it type of response.  When I first got into pedal building I was converting a lot of V847's to true bypass and upgrading the caps, pot, and inductor for resale, I emailed him quite a bit as I was buying 5 inductors at a time,  I remember from our communication then that he was pretty short in answer then and I got rubbed the wrong way a few times, but then realized that I thought he was actually being nice, just really NYC nice, not salt of the earth nice...

If you are just looking for something new and you want a timbo_93631 Halo inductor on an etched and populated weener wah II board let me know, would be happy to PIF one your way...

Wow, that's quite generous! I'll shoot you a PM.

I didn't realize he was from NYC. That makes more sense now. Being an Okie (not from Muskogee thankfully) I think I did just take it the wrong way.
