naughty fish sounds like a distortion??

i bought a naughty fish board a while back and gave it to a friend who is an excellent pedal builder. he did a nice clean job wiring it up and everything but it wont do what it supposed to, and as he said "it just sounds like an overdrive"

he hasn't had a ton of time to trouble shoot it yet but i thought id post here in case i get some info i can pass on to him...

id really love to hear this pedal as its intended to sound - can anyone think of any reason that this would happen? bad component, or would this be something in the way it was wired and built?

There's not enough information provided to give any sort of help. Without knowledge of any part substitutions used, voltages on the build, pictures, etc I can't offer much advice.
