I've started doing hybrid boards, no point in using a 5 cent film cap for a 100nF power filter when a 0.9 cent X7R MLCC will do just as well and take up less space. Transistors can be found for 1.3 cents each and resistors 0.5 cents. The boards are generally 2/3 to 1/2 the size if you use 0805 sized passives.

That's a good trick I got from Jurgen Haible, actually -- instead of 100n bypass caps everywhere, put them on the bottom as 0805's
