Bypass/mute question

Have you ever had this happen?

Say you had a true bypass loop. When it's empty, as in no effect plugged into the loop, you'd expect that the signal would go dead; the signal should be muted with nothing in the loop.

But, instead of it muting, instead you get a dark/quieter signal, like the signal has dropped in volume by half, and you rolled the tone knob all the way off. Add another bypass loop like the first and it gets quieter and darker. Add a third, and it finally gets muted.

What would be contributing to this problem?

Hmm..  I would check the 3PDT (resistance check across the lugs) or double check the wiring.  It is entirely possible that the 3PDT is shot.

Let's assume that we're using Relays, and that it's a cumulative thing, so the individual relays aren't the issue.

I can see it's wouldn't just be me who might be stumped on this one. Not sure how/why this is happening.
