Quick Snarkdoodle question

When building the Snarkdoodle to the Craig Anderton specs... Should I jumper R1, or just leave it empty there?

omit = leave it out.
jumper = um, jumper.

Edit: Should add a little bit of learning here. What, in your opinion based on the schematic, would happen if you made R1 a jumper?

There would be a connection to ground really really close to the input? Which I'm guessing would make the pedal not work?
