Yeah I have, lack of e-mail response to the basic question of "what's the best format to submit pedal drill pattern and dimensions".  I've used Mammoth for parts and drilled the holes myself but like the option of letting them do the work for a fee.  I'd just like the best way to transfer the info to them; apparently a Visio diagram with precise dimensions isn't good enough.  Argh!

Hi All,

After much looking around I've decided to embark on a FatPants ed. 2012 build.  I've read the build doc and have a few questions about the parts.

1. Will box film caps from Mammoth fit in the signal cap locations?

2. Are > 36V rated filter caps good enough for the electrolytics near the charge pump?  Also, what's the general requirement for the voltage rating on electrolytics in the signal path?  I wish the build docs provided voltage ratings for caps!  Are the "audiophile grade" caps worth it?

I see the PCB will be available on 4-1, is it possible the layout or components will change?

Thanks!

General Questions / Thunderpuss and MOSFET's
March 24, 2013, 09:53:51 PM
Hi All,

I purchased a Boss Blues Driver and love it!  I like the range of clean boost to dirty grit it gives me.  My brother likes heavier music and loves his fuzz and distortion pedals.  He, surprisingly, loved the above Boss pedal when it was used as a clean boost into his Vox AC15; level cranked and gain at minimum.  I've built a few DIY pedals and ain't scared to put together a booster for him.  After looking through the projects I noticed the Thunderpuss.  It seems perfect; 35dB of clean boost and 3dB boost when at minimum.  But after looking around I've noticed a lot of people hating on MOSFET boosters due to claims of static sensitivity and un-even gain across different batches of the same type MOSFET transistor.  Any thoughts on this?  We'd like to keep this circuit simple with a focus on clarity and quality, please advise!

Thanks,
-Pete

General Questions / Transparent OD? Egghead?
March 17, 2013, 01:48:22 PM
Hi All!

I'm new to the Madbean forums.  I've built one non-Madbean project, namely the Modified EA Tremolo, and am officially hooked!  I keep coming back here because this site just feels different and more focused on community and learning, which I love.  Anyways, I'm looking to build an overdrive and after much critical listening to various pedals in stores these are my criteria for an overdrive.

1. Transparent.  No mid boosts, high cuts for me, I like clarity. Similar to a Boss BD-2 but less shrill and less fizzy..
2. Slight boost - moderate breakup.  This is totally subjective of course, but I like some range in a gain knob.  The Boss BD-2 has come the closest to what I'm looking for here.  The negative of that pedal is the ice-picky brightness.
3. Asymmetrical clipping.  I don't know if this is a mental thing but after researching pedals I've liked/not liked, I don't like pedals with symmetrical clipping.  Asymmetrical clipping sounds more colorful and organic to me, even in the Boss SD-1.

So after looking through the projects, the Egghead seems like the perfect build.  Simple good looking circuit, and the right clipping.  the problem is I can't find any sound clips!  Any opinions?  Thanks!
