I'm curious about this too. I'm not sure, but I think a higher value gain pot would make the pedal a little quieter and cleaner sounding overall.

I built my KS with the 100K gain pot (used audio/log), but want to push the overdrive even harder. Many times I'm totally maxed with the gain all the way up. Do you guys think changing to a 50K pot do the trick?

You might try a different taper on your gain pot. Try an audio log pot instead of the suggested linear pot. You'll have more play on the front of the knob before it starts overdriving. Audio log pots are abeles with an A and the liners are labeled with a B.

Yep, that's how I've been wiring mine. 4K7 is a good starting point, but  I've been using lower value resistors. Do a little experimenting before you heat shrink and commit. I like my LEDs on the brighter side.

Thanks guys that makes a lot more sense. I think I need to play with the pedal a bit more to see if I want to put the OD back on a switch or try and even out the volume and use a footswitch.

Here's a couple questions for the brain trust.
1.) If I did opt to bring down the volume when the OD is off which would have the least impact on tone? Adding a resistor in SERIES with R24 or adding a resistor to C11 as suggested earlier?
2.) Would it be easier/possible to raise the volume when the OD is engaged? I'm thinking something involving a transistor...? I know a transistor will impact tone, but the OD is supposed to be different.

So this is a common problem with this circuit? It's odd to me that volume only drops when the OD is engaged. It doesn't change volume when selecting no diode, D8/D9, or D4/D5 on the diode select switch.

What about adding a 3PDT switch that activates a resistor in parallel with R24? The switch would connect the resistor to the circuit when the OD is off to bring the volume down. Would adding more impedance at that stage of the circuit alter the sound much?

My Kingslayer sounds great, but when I engage the overdrive the volume drops substantially. I've got BAT46's in for the OD. Anyone else have this issue?

i did alter the switch from the original BOM. Instead of using a spst switch listed in the bill of material I used a dpdt stomp switch. One side of the switch is activating an LED.

EDIT: I re-posted this in the tech help section of the forum. Respond to it there.

Glad to see your daughter board works well stomptown. I actually opted to go with a bi-color LED route instead of using your schematic. Once I thought about it a little more I liked that the LED is inactive when no diode is selected. I wound up running the DC power to the 3pdt on/off switch. When the pedal is on it powers all the LEDs (on/off, clip, OD). When the pedal is bypassed it kills all the LEDs. The LEDs are wired in parrallel by way of 3 wires soldered to the same lug of the 3pdt switch. Now the problem is that the LEDs are loosing intensity as more lights become active. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

You guys are awesome! Thanks for the help. I wasn't expecting a pdf of the layout. That's handy for a noob like me.
I was waiting to order the last few parts till I could get my LED problem figured out. I should be able to order the final pieces tomorrow. I'll keep y'all posted on how the build turns out.

Mods / Kingslayer mod: Add LED
July 14, 2013, 08:45:37 PM
I'm building a Kingslayer as my first madbean pedal. It's going we'll, but I'd like to a tri-color LED for the diode select switch. I'd also like to add a LED to indicate when the overdrive is on. I'm going with a foot switch for the OD. I have no idea where to start on this. Anyone have experience adding either of these mods?

That's perfect guys thanks! ;D

Hey guys,
I'm about to start a Kingslayer. This is my first time sourcing my own parts for a build. I've got all my components picked up, but I can't seem to find sockets for the diodes and resistors. I'd like to socket a few things to experiment with the values. Any ideas on where to get the sockets?

Something like Brian did would be great. I'll post a pict of his build to show you what I mean.
