Check out the Garnett tone control. It's a cool (simple) tone control circuit that interfaces between the plate and the cathode.

Open Discussion / Re: Tell me about the Dumble
October 23, 2014, 11:58:31 PM
Having built a few Dumble ODS over the year I can safely say the ROG Umble sounds nothing like the real deal.

The Dumble tone is fairly well defined, the 80's ODS circuit hasn't changed since well the 80's. Yes each amp is tweaked for the player but the fundamental tone is there. What people don't understand when building/tweaking Dumble amps is it is the small tweaks and nuances that makes the amps so special. It isn't one special component or major tweak.

Dumble's are not high gain amps. They aren't Fender clones like people think. Keep the bass tight, the highs clear and glassy sounding (did I really type that? lol) and the mids in focus and you got most of the Dumble tone. I'd say any Tube Screamer clone with a decent hi-fi esque op-amp would get you "the Dumble tone" in most bedroom rockers minds.

3 months away from getting my EE degree

As mentioned already, an EE degree will not help you design pedals. It will however allow you to better understand, designs, critique them while giving you a totally different mindset than most professions will give you.

Being a EE is a great career choice though. Opens up many doors for you.

More and more people seem to be using 0-ohm jumpers, they make things look so tidy sometimes :)

What Ge clipping diodes are those, and what 1/4" jacks did you use?
Ge diodes are some old 1N34A I got from a local electronics store years ago. They must look cool!

I ordered a couple different sets of jacks to try on this 1590A build, wanted to see what worked best.
In the end I settled on these http://ca.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=NYS2343virtualkey56810000virtualkey568-NYS234-3
I think these are the same ones Pickdropper uses.

Build Reports / 1590A Klon
November 02, 2013, 06:36:17 PM
My first 1590A build. Always thought the enclosure size was too small and limiting but since getting a Ditto Looper and now this small Klon I am warming up to these tiny enclosures.

Surprisingly the build together went very smoothly, limited curse words while building which I was not expecting. My Envirotex finishing is even getting better, so all around a enjoyable build.

The PCB is an Apis PCB from Beehive Pedals. Nicely designed PCB that fit perfectly. I found using ribbon cable made this build way easier.

Other than that the pedal is just a standard true bypass Klon. Sold my 1790NS Klon on vero (built when the circuit was degooped 5 or so years ago) to fund this smaller build. Same sound with a third of the real estate on my pedal board.

General Questions / Re: INKSCAPE Questions and Help
October 20, 2013, 08:10:41 PM
Thanks Dave. My rectangle was a path and not an object. I redrew the rectangle as an object, radiused the corners, converted it to a path then did the cutouts I had before.

Here's another one I've been trying to figure out. How do I round the corners here? I'd like to increase the radius a bit more.

General Questions / Re: Switching between pots

You could do it with a 4PDT and have no LED indicator

Or you could do it with a SPST switch, LED indicator and 2 relays.

Build Reports / Re: 4 Delays and a Reverb

Thanks guys!

I usually sign the lids of the pedals completed with my name, date and the song I was listening to while finishing the build. Been listening to The National a lot!

Build Reports / 4 Delays and a Reverb
September 09, 2013, 04:52:05 PM
Having not built a complete pedal in almost exactly four years I decided to build some delay pedals this past winter/spring. Just got around to finishing them now. I wrote about it http://pdfelectronics.com/delay-project/ (wip) if you're interested.

It was a learning experience, using Inkscape, learning how to use Envirotex, building on all these nice PCBs, etc. Anyways I think the pedals turned out pretty good. It was fun building them all and now getting to play them. During this little project I managed to also acquire a Dito Looper and volume pedal. Anyways I've been getting some pretty cool ambient type sounds with all these pedals going!

(got the pots labelled wrong so I couldn't use the PCB mounted pots, what a mess :( )

I'm not a huge fan of how they've just labelled the pads 1 to 8.

It reminds me of a lecture from my woodwork teacher a couple decades ago -- if you don't put down length of whatever, width of whatever, and what units it's in for an equation you're doing, you are just adding and subtracting some random numbers, not numbers pertaining to something concrete. (He put it better, though.)
What's weirder is how they have actually limited you to 8 pads. Look there is only pads for 1-7.

What if you do want to use that other (8th) pad.... Things won't look so neat...

Those would be 1/8W resistors. I think the build doc makes note of this.
