Open Discussion / Re: Guitar too dark / hardware?
January 12, 2025, 12:02:59 PM
Sorry, busy weekend.

Warmoth Boatneck roasted maple
Oiled roasted pine body with Strat contours
Tonerider AC2 Humbuckers
G&L PTB wiring (aka Reverend Bass contour), parallel/serial switch for each pickup via push/pull

I will start with steel saddles first and see how that works out.

Open Discussion / Guitar too dark / hardware?
January 10, 2025, 12:51:39 PM
Hello everyone, I haven't posted in a long time.

A question about guitar optimization:
I have a Partscaster Humbucker Tele that sounds a bit dark, but it does sound dark even unplugged, the high end that I get unplugged from my regular Tele is missing, so it's not the humbuckers. I had these pickups in a different guitar before, so I know them, they're not too dark. It must be the hardware.
The guitar has a Tele Humbucker bridge with brass saddles.
It has a black TUSQ nut.
I play D'Addario "Half Rounds", which are a sort of "bright flatwounds" on all electrics, I'd like to keep those. But they're not too dark either.
Do any of you guitar experts have an idea how to get a bit more high end out of that guitar? Steel saddles are the only thing I can think of. Do they make things much brighter and have a big effect?
Any tip is appreciated.

Open Discussion / Standard Series Wiring

I don't use footswitch daughterboards, and I don't like to use pads on the PCB that go directly to the jacks, I just like the old way of using the four 9V/Ground/In/Out pads.
So, yesterday I finished my first three pedals of the new Madbean standard series and none of them worked. Took me a while to figure out that you have to use the SEND and RETURN pads as IN and OUT if you wire them up like I do.

Quote from: pierre67 on July 18, 2024, 02:08:06 PMI really think you should consider Musikding in Germany, they are highly recommended and reliable. Maybe another option is Retroamplis in Spain...

Or UK Electronic ("UK" ist just the name, they are in Germany, fair and reliable); or Banzai if need be.

Edit:
Or Tube Town

Fuzzdog from the UK stopped shipping to several European countries after Brexit because of the nitpickers (I had to google that word) from customs. Italy and Germany are still off the map.

QuoteIt is incredibly frustrating on all sides. My European orders have dropped significantly over the last 2-3 years, as well.
If you were to have a EU distro and dropshipped from the pcb house, would that help?

Comment from the peanut gallery, but it sounds like an opportunity for an enterprising eurobean member—if all parties are in agreement and it works out to be beneficial.
Great idea. A collaboration with Fuzzdog (off the map for me here ...) or Moonn or ... would be fantastic.

Not much better here in Germany.

Quote from: djaaz on July 10, 2024, 11:00:55 AMBrian, did you ever consider a deal with Musikding? or a more personal setup. Might be an easy thing?
The problem with Musikding is that they only do kits. The sell the stuff from Aion and PedalPCB and Lectric and so on, but only as kits. That's much more expensive than buying PCBs when you're stocked up on everything else.
And additionally, they don't even have all the parts for the PCBs of which they sell kits (the proper LDRs for PedalPCB's Harmonic Trem come to mind, or 1k trimmers for some of their fuzzes).

I can only log in with Chrome Browser.
All other Browsers (Firefox, Brave, Edge) kick me out after seeing one page. And I have to log in twice to see that one page. No matter if on phone or desktop.

Looking good!

Is there a way to get the links that were at the top of the old page back? That was very handy.

Changed those two caps as per your suggestion and now the pedal sounds much better. Thanks again.

General Questions / Effects Layouts Crystal Shard

I finished the Effects Layouts Crystal Shard: https://effectslayouts.com/product/crystal-shard/
It's a modified mashup of the EQD Chrysalis and Arrows aka an Electra circuit, and I like its character but do feel that it's quite a bit on the bright side.
In the BOM it says that it's "ripe for experimentation" but what could I do to get rid of the really excessive treble and instead add some bass and body? Increase C2 and C8? To what values?
I will definitely change the volume pot to a logarithmic one because it gets too loud too quickly.
Other than that it's a nice pedal, a simple uncompressed Overdrive.

Thank you!

Make sure that you know and like the two circuits before you put them in one enclosure. I had put two different overdrives or one boost and one overdrive or two boosts in one box, but tastes change and I only ended up using one. Luckily, I got those sold.
Currently on my board are these 2-in-1s:
dual compressor (DOD 280 and RottenKomp)
Green Ringer + ZVex Machine (great noise combination)
Silicon Fuzz Face + Silicon Tonebender Mk2
LPB1 + Naga Viper
Runoffgroove TriVibe + STM Tremolo
