General Questions / Harbinger Two - NSL32 options
December 11, 2021, 11:20:37 AM
Hey Team, so I finally have the parts to finish my Harbinger Two board I got a while ago except the NSL-32's. They aren't overly common to come by in New Zealand and anywhere that does do them have minimum spends or huge shipping costs.

Is there anything else I can use/make ( even temporary ) to get the unit up and working until I can find some. I've heard you can use an LED + LDR in a pinch but no idea where to start with that.

Cheers

@wormboy, so finally got it sorted. Thanks for the tips.

Put a bigger 50k trimmer in it and it biased right up, the strange gain issue was a dead 470k resistor ( old stock I had around ).

Tell ya what, this thing has HEAPs of gain, cleans up really well on the guitar vol too. All the Ge's are MP49B russians at ~40hfe and low leakage. Now I have to make one for dad haha

Hi Guys,

Hoping someone might be able to help me. I have finally got round to building the Germocide fuzz, the Dragonfly pedal that you can use up some old low HFE germaniums. Now I have got it going, but I can't seem to get q4/q5 to -4.5v if it set the trim pot to all the way clockwise it gets -2.7v max. Is there a resistor I can change to give me more adjustment? Also the Gain pot seems to be acting funny, at 0 there is nothing, at 12 o'clock there is fuzz and at full there is nothing.

Any advice would be awesome, the thread over at tagboard is mostly dead. Schems attached.

Cheers

Does anyone have the layout the 'Big Motherf$#@king Pig' layout from the old turretboard.org site? It seems to be a full tagboard layout of the BMP. Keen to build it, but can't seem to find the layouts.

Would be the perfect build for these old parts.

Hilariously, that is the 'handful' i kept. There was about 5 times this much. Historical accuracy isn't a deal breaker for me. These just came with a bunch of other things I got a while ago. Kept them to use in projects instead of buying more parts.

Thanks @midwayfair for the advice on where NOT to use them. I've mainly used them in fuzzes, wah's and replacing parts in old Marshall's, Fenders, Jansens where it was the original part since I had it. Big Muff is good, don't have one anymore.

Would love to do an all axial component build with some of these just cause it would look cool.

Hey team,

Just wondering if anyone has any cool ideas that I could use any of this silly amount of NOS vintage caps for?

Old wah's? amps? (I have used the mustards in Marshall clones in the past )

Hey guys,

Just got my past / present project blog up and going finally and would be cool to see what you guys think.

I have a few more things to put up, namely the resource section and a few more older projects.

Cheers

Luck for some ^^^ haha

Are there any alternative devices to the usual J201/2N5457 etc, other than going SMD?
#11
Those look pretty damn cool, might need to get a bunch! Might make matching them up harder though haha

Is it correct that a lot of those pedal designs 'could' use any N-channel JFET and sound "pretty close".
#12
So I am trying to decide on some bulk JFET purchases and am after some alternatives. 2N5457, J201 and PN4393's seem to be hard to come by genuine ones. Looking at building some of the 'Amps in a box' style pedals (soldano SLO/Dr Boogie/Laney Superlead) from Tagboard effects.

So does anyone have useable equivalent's (i've heard J112, J111's etc) or a reasonably priced source that can send to New Zealand?

I don't mind eBay if its confirmed to be not fakes like Tayda etc.

Cheers

Wiring it up is going to be fun. Do you know where to get the eagle lbr for those Lorlin rotary switches? Was going to try draw up schematic in Eagle before I attempted to do it by hand and make a mess of it.
#14
Cool at least its doable. Will have to figure out how to lay it up.

Hey guys, just after some clarification on something. I am looking at doing a Beavis Audio Fuzz Lab style project and liked his idea of having transistors on 'flying leads' on a DPDT toggle switch to switch between Ge/Si or two different types of Ge's.

Now I have a crap ton of Ge stuff from ordering parts for builds for friends and was trying to figure out a way to use a 3 Pole 4 Position Rotary switch to swap between four transistor options. Any idea if this will work and how to wire up a 3P4P switch like this from tayda?
