Bad ass. Great build! I can't wait until these boards are back in stock.

Any specific reason you used 1/8 watt resistors? Just because they are smaller?

Build Reports / Re: Retrograde & the Dirtbag Deluxe

Thanks everyone. I've been playing around with the d-bag a lot more today. I think I've got this thing figured out. It's amazing the types of sounds you can get with extreme delay/feedback settings. Very cool stuff.

Build Reports / Retrograde & the Dirtbag Deluxe
February 13, 2013, 05:59:07 PM
The Dirtbag Deluxe was a monstrous build but a lot of fun. I've always loved the name of the german audio electronics company, "Echolette", so I decided to use it. They made some great tape echo machines.

I'm still getting a slight bit of distortion on the repeats. I've read all the forum material on this subject and believe I've made all the necessary adjustments. Maybe I just need to play with the gain trims a bit more.

The retrograde is definitely a "nasty wall of fuzz". The enclosure for this project turned out to be a big hassel. After screwing up the water slide decals (forgot to pre-clearcoat), sanding, and repainting, I believe I will be buying my enclosures pre-painted from now on.

These look amazing. I've always wondered how to achieve white or vibrant decals on dark surfaces...

Very cool!

Looks fantastic. Super clean, both inside and out. The laser etching is slick. Are you able to do this yourself or do you have to have a shop with the right equipment do it?

Build Reports / Re: Behold. The Meatsphere.

Thanks everyone. This build is a monster. I've been messing around with it for 2 days now and I'm still finding different nuances.

GrindCustoms: When I first wired up the Meatsphere I believe I had some grounding issues as well, that's why I decided to go with the MadBean Standard wiring scheme instead of the one provided. I just left the LED on the meatsphere wired to the LED +/- on the PCB.

Haberdasher: It's a laser print. I'm very happy with how this came out.

Build Reports / Behold. The Meatsphere.

This one has been in the works for awhile. If Scott Mezei didn't stop by the other day and get this build back on track, it would still be sitting on the shelf. Thanks!

The Meatsphere is a wild beast that takes a bit of experimenting to tame. It's a funky "auto-wah" that is capable of producing some of the craziest sounds. I will do an audio/video demo sometime soon.

At the moment I have the Send/Return jacks bypassed and I used the MadBean Standard wiring diagram instead of the one provided with the project. This was my first crack at using waterslide decals. It worked better than I hoped! I will definitely be using this method of finishing again. And yes, I screwed up on labeling the controls. I used "Delay" instead of "Decay". Just gives me an excuse to build another one!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. This is one of my favorite completed builds so far.

After finishing this I immediately thought of doing a "White Rabbit" themed enclosure too! Alas, I'm not the first. I've seen a few on the DIYStompBoxes Forum. Doesn't mean we can't put our own spin on it.  :)

Great to see so many Deftones fans.

Very slick. I love it. I just finished a Pork Barrel as well. I should have left a static LED too. Did you just leave the static LED wired as per the Standard Wiring Diagram and then add the LFO indicator mod?

The finish and decal are awesome.

Boom. icecycle66 is correct. Glass top patio table.

I never realized how much more difficult it was to screen white on color in comparison to dark on lights. I definitely took the hard route.

A complex and harsh fuzz, I really like this one. Great project MadBean!

I had mentioned earlier that I would never try to paint an enclosure again but I'm glad I did. The decals are actually just cutouts from a high gloss paper and glued on, finished in a clear acrylic. I can't believe this worked as well as it did. Quite tedious though.

This is a bit of an homage to one of my favorite bands and albums, The Deftones "White Pony".

General Questions / Re: Enclosure Etching Failure
June 30, 2012, 10:50:38 PM
I'm using a large Ricoh copier.

This last time around I decided to run the page through the printer an extra time for an extra layer of toner. My attempt to transfer the toner to the enclosure this time around was a bit more successful. I touched it up with some nail polish and decided to go for it.

I let it sit in the Ferric Chloride for about 10 minutes. I took it out once and gave it a bit of a wash and put it back in. It looked like the Ferric Chloride was started to eat through the toner so I decided it was time to remove it. Definitely not a deep etch but I was starting to lose detail.

I think next time I need to find a better paper/toner combination.

Build Reports / The Morris Chorus (Pork Barrel)
June 30, 2012, 10:33:40 PM
This was my first attempt at etching an enclosure. It was a lot of trial and error, but it came out ok. My original intentions were to paint "Morris" blue and the rest of the etch black but I didn't do this because of the depth of the etch, it's very shallow. I was concerned that any more sanding would further remove the detail.

I added the LFO mod with a blue superbright LED. Super cool.

I really appreciate everyones advice so far.

Leaving extra paper on top of the toner was my biggest concern, I wasn't sure how it would react with the Ferric Chloride. Looking back at my last attempt, I'm starting to think it was salvageable. I think I will start again one more time and work on some of the weak areas. Fourth times the charm, right?
