Laureate I've had since release and just got to it in the last week. Only got a few minutes to play it but I was blown away in those few minutes. I'm just waiting now for the box to cure up.

I use one of these component testers which will give you type and pinout as well as Hfe reading and leakage. Handy to have and not expensive. There's lots of other component testers out there, more flash and expensive ones too.
This one has worked well for me so far:

So my dad had a bag of NPN and PNP transistors.

Is there any way to identify these? At least to know what type. There are no markings on them at all.

HA! I wish it did. I almost had to redo the box because I didn't realize just how close to the top the jacks needed to be. I lucked out and now I know for next time.
