Thanks for the comments!

Build Reports / The dark side of the fuzz
November 29, 2011, 06:20:02 PM
This is my lastest pedal building so far, with one of the lastest darkside boards Madbean sold:

now it has 2 1N60p (the photos were with 4 1N60p) and 2 Bat 41s. I don't now if I really like this pedal too much, must be try it with group volumes yet, and it's noisy (hiss) if you crank the sustain knob up.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Darkside hiss problem
November 15, 2011, 07:05:17 PM
Hi everybody,

I've just finished my Darkside (must be one of the last madbean's PCB before he discontinued them). I've used the stock values (panasonic capacitors, xicon metal film resistors), BC549 transistors, 1N60P for D1&D2 and BAT41 for D3&D4. First I tried 1N60p for all the diodes but I found this combination gives me a little more bite. It sounds good at full guitar volume (I don't like very much when you roll it back) but I've found that if I pass SUS beyond 2 o'clock it starts to make a loud hiss noise. I'm a bit lost, I don't know where to start, bypassed it's dead silent (and below 2 o'clock).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

It's a pitty there isn't quasar boards anymore, the pedal it's based on is great  :'(

Nice build!!

Hi!

this is my latest madbean build, a cupcake compressor. I've named it "The sultan of comps" because I'm a big Knopfler's fan and I've always heard he used an orange squeezer com in the first Dire Straits album.

Thanks Brian for the high quality projects and boards!!

Thanks for the info, I have a neutrino black version board waiting to go to a enclosure so I will have to try this ;)

I've yet to try more diodes, I've tried banzai's 1n34a and some old germanium diodes I've have lying arround for a long time (OF305). In both cases the drive doesn't really start since past middle in the gain control but... what a sound!! I tried it yesterday with my '63 vibroverb reissue and it sounded incredible.

I will surely change the volume pot for a logarithmic (audio taper) one for better control of the great amount of volume gain available.

Thanks everybody!!

OMG, what a beautiful thing!!! Great job, awesome!  ;)

I think I maybe have the same problem. From 0 to about 2PM I've a cleanish sound (no distortion) and from that to 10 I've got all the drive, but I think is less than the drive I heard from the clips in youtube (maybe is also amp drive?), I've used 1n34a diodes from banzai (Germany) but I've have yet to try others. My voltages seems ok (a little lower than that from the proyect PDF but also the batery level is lower):

Battery: 8,63v

IC1:

Pin1: 4,29v
Pin2: 4,27v
Pin3: 3,28v
Pin4: 0v
Pin5: 4,24v
Pin6: 4,27v
Pin7: 4,28v
Pin8: 8,54v

IC2:

Pin1: 4,23v
Pin2: 4,24v
Pin3: 4,24v
Pin4: -8,18v
Pin5: 4,23v
Pin6: 4,24v
Pin7: 4,24v
Pin8: 15,29v

IC3:

Pin1: 8,49v
Pin2: 4,24v
Pin3: 0v
Pin4: -4,02v
Pin5: -8,16v
Pin6: 4,01v
Pin7: 6,43v
Pin8: 8,47v

Do you resolve your problem?

I've used 1n34a. Until 2pm in the gain control It's maybe too clean and past 2pm it's where all the drive it's being, so maybe I'll try other diodes. (well that with a strat and fender vibrochamp, I have yet to try it with more volume and a bigger amp)

Thanks everybody, glad you like it!!
